URC 2027: Engineering Design Analysis

A first-build reference for a university Mars rover team. The rules, the teams, the subsystems, the numbers and the plan, with every claim tied to a source.

What this book is

The 2027 University Rover Challenge asks a student team to build a rover that can do four very different jobs: find signs of life, deliver objects across rough terrain, service equipment built for a suited astronaut, and navigate and assist a human in the field. The rules are public. The hard part is knowing which of the hundreds of possible designs will survive a first build.

This book is the answer to that question, written from the public record. It decodes the 2027 rules and scoring, profiles the teams that have done it well, studies twelve subsystems against the evidence, and works the cross-cutting problems that decide whether a rover finishes: mass, power, interfaces, failure and the clock. It then backfits the analysis to each 2027 mission and turns it into a 31-week build plan.

The book does not design the rover. It gives the requirements, the options, the numbers and the trades, and it recommends a first-build shortlist. The detail design and the test campaign are the team's work.

What changed for 2027

The 2027 rules are not a small update. They add a mandatory astronaut-assistance element, make two life-detection capabilities mandatory with at least one bioassay, stage the Delivery mission behind a first-stage gate, and keep the 50 kg and 1.2 m limits while adding work. The four missions still total 400 points, and the System Acceptance Review still carries 100 and gates the field.

The practical consequences are in What 2027 invalidates. The short version: the rover has to be more capable, not heavier; the arm has to type and service, not only lift; the software has to complete autonomy, not demonstrate it; and the review has to be treated as a fifth mission.

How to use the numbers

Every statistic has an owner, a sample and a date. A score claim from 2024 is labelled 2024. A mass that a team published is not a judge-weighed mass, and the page says which it is. Where the record has no answer, the page says that too.

The key numbers page is the one-page cheat sheet. The evidence page explains the grades, the citation form and the known limits.

The one-paragraph version

Build a six-wheel, skid-steer rover under 45 kg with a 9:1 class actuator, a stiff arm with a compliant typing tip, a two-plane radio link, a 400-500 Wh pack and a software stack that can complete a route without help. Treat the SAR as a fifth mission, freeze the configuration in April, and spend the first four weeks measuring rather than choosing.
